PURPLE message to the European Parliament

PURPLE calls for stronger recognition of the needs of peri-urban regions in new legislative proposals. Read PURPLE's message to the European Parliament

The plenary of the European Parliament, July 2011, has agreed an amendment to the 5th Cohesion Report which 'stresses that towns and cities can make a key contribution, as growth centres and growth drivers, to a given region; at the same time, points to the need for rural settlements to participate in integrated solutions for a given functional geographical entity by means of the fostering of partnerships and networks; stresses that larger urban centres face specific challenges because of the complexity of their social, economic and environmental tasks; in this context, sees the endogenous potential of rural and peri-urban areas  as offering an opportunity for development, though not only around agglomerations and big cities'.

The potential of Europe's peri-urban agriculture acknowledged by EU institutions. Read the PURPLE press release (versions in English or French) following the adoption by the European Parliament in its plenary session on 8 July, 2010 of a report on the future of the CAP post 2013.
