Peri-Urban discussions in the Committee of the Regions

PURPLE's Vice President addresses the meeting of the CoR Bureau in Gödöllő, Hungary

Invited by the president of the CoR, Mrs Mercedes Bresso, PURPLE Vice-President Lenie Dwarshuis participated in a debate on “Small settlements in the proximity of metropolitan agglomerations”. The debate took place on 4 March in Gödöllő, Hungary, as part of the Bureau meeting of the CoR.

In her intervention Mrs Dwarshuis stressed the importance of the recognition of the peri-urban specificities in European policy. She argued that the regions should get a directive role in the new CAP, in order to make balanced decisions in answer to peri-urban challenges. To facilitate this, an enlargement of the budget for rural development (pillar II) in the new CAP is needed. Finally, she advocated a stronger link and greater synergy between ERDF and EARFD actions.

She also called upon representatives of DG Regio and DG AGRI to recognise the overlap between urban and rural features in peri-urban areas when making new policies and to work more strongly together on these issues.
