How can regions and towns support peri-urban agriculture?

Nord Pas de Calais was the setting on 2 and 3 April 2009, for a conference and visits marking the 9th General Assembly of the PURPLE network. The conference theme How can regions and towns support peri-urban agriculture? involved presentations and debates on:

- Dynamising local markets for local production
-  Encouraging services as a complementary source of income for farmers
- Building a harmonious rural-urban relationship

Three short films showed good practice examples from the Nord Pas de Calais area.

PURPLE members Frankfurt Rhein-Main and Ile-de-France are partners in the C-CHANGE Interreg IVB NWE project that has now been approved.

C-CHANGE aims to achieve a 'sea-change' in attitudes, behaviours and practical responses to the challenges that climate change raises for city regions by:
Empowering politicians, planners, practitioners, communities, and in particular young people, to champion these approaches;
Developing creative solutions to the sustainable management of open space;
Climate-proofing regional spatial plans and strategies.

There is a peri-urban component in this project as some case study areas are located outside the core cities.

This is a 7.2 M€ project initiated by the core of the SAUL project partnership (www.saulproject.net).

Other partners are London (Lead Partner: Groundwork), Luxembourg, Amsterdam, the German Saarland, Dutch Gelderland, and the UK Forestry Commission.
